Vancouver Island, Avi Lewis is hopping on the ferry and heading your way to talk all things Jobs, Justice, Climate!
Across Vancouver Island, British Columbia, and around the world, communities are reeling from unprecedented fires, floods, and extreme weather events. In 2021, the heat dome claimed the lives of 619 people. In 2023, the province experienced its worst wildfire season on record with 2,840,104 hectares burned. And in the past two months alone, hundreds have been evacuated due to severe flooding, most recently in the Comox Valley, which declared a state of emergency just a week ago.
Meanwhile, the fossil fuel giants fuelling this crisis are raking in record profits as they slash jobs, trample Indigenous rights, and foreclose on our collective future. We are at a tipping point. And yet, at almost every level of government, our elected leaders refuse to act like it.
Prime Minister Mark Carney has made it abundantly clear whose side he’s on. He has rolled out new fossil fuel subsidies, watered down anti-greenwashing legislation, and scrapped the oil and gas emissions cap to the delight of fossil fuel CEOs. He has also announced a reckless deal with Alberta Premier Danielle Smith to build a pipeline from Alberta to the Northwest Coast despite vocal opposition from First Nations and people across B.C.
It’s time to fight for the future we deserve— one that creates good green jobs, enshrines justice, and secures a livable climate for working people. From Monday, February 9th to Wednesday, February 11th, Avi Lewis is heading out on a mini-tour of Vancouver Island to talk about how we can take on the billionaire class and fight for the bold solutions that our climate and communities deserve.
